New Zealand Employment Trends: What Employers and Job Seekers Need to Know for July 2026

The New Zealand job market continues to strengthen, creating new opportunities for both employers and job seekers. According to the latest SEEK Employment Report, the labour market remained resilient throughout June, with steady growth in job advertisements, increasing demand for AI skills, and strong hiring activity across several key industries.

At Employme Solutions, we closely monitor employment trends to help businesses make informed hiring decisions and connect talented people with the right opportunities. Here's what stood out in the latest report and what it means for the months ahead.

The NZ Job Market Continues to Grow

New Zealand has now experienced 19 consecutive months of growth in job advertisements, with listings increasing by 0.2% in June and sitting 10.7% higher than June 2025.

This sustained growth is a positive sign for employers looking to expand their teams and for candidates considering a career move. While competition for skilled professionals remains strong, businesses that recruit proactively are well placed to secure top talent.

AI Skills Are Now a Key Hiring Priority

Artificial Intelligence is no longer just a technology trend. It's becoming an essential workplace skill across many industries.

Job advertisements mentioning AI skills increased 3.9% during June and are now an impressive 107.3% higher than a year ago.

What's particularly interesting is that demand has grown across jobs with both high and low levels of automation exposure. From administration and customer service to finance, engineering and professional services, employers are increasingly seeking people who can confidently work alongside AI-powered tools. For job seekers, developing AI skills is becoming one of the smartest investments you can make for your future career.

More Jobs, But Competition Remains

Although job opportunities continue to increase, applications per job advertisement remain relatively high. Encouragingly, this trend has gradually eased since mid-2025 and remained stable throughout June. This suggests the employment market is moving towards a healthier balance, with employers enjoying access to strong candidate pools while applicants benefit from a wider range of opportunities.

Regional Employment Trends Across New Zealand

Hiring demand varied across the country during June. Leading the way was Taranaki, where job advertisements increased 2.5%, followed by Canterbury, up 1.3%. Wellington also recorded positive growth of 0.9%, while Auckland experienced a slight decline of 0.4% for the month. These regional shifts highlight the importance of understanding local labour markets when planning recruitment strategies or considering a career move.

Construction Leads Industry Growth

Several industries enjoyed strong hiring activity throughout June. The Mining, Resources & Energy sector recorded the largest monthly increase in job advertisements, rising 4.0%, while Community Services & Development followed closely with 2.4% growth.

The standout performer, however, was the Construction industry, where demand for workers has increased 35.1% year on year, making it New Zealand's fastest-growing sector for recruitment.

With ongoing infrastructure projects, residential development and commercial construction activity, demand for skilled tradespeople and construction professionals is expected to remain high throughout 2026.

What This Means for Employers

As the labour market continues to evolve, successful recruitment is about more than simply advertising a vacancy.

Employers should focus on:

  • Acting quickly when the right candidate becomes available.
  • Offering competitive salaries and attractive workplace benefits.
  • Promoting career development and training opportunities.
  • Looking for candidates with adaptable digital and AI skills.
  • Partnering with experienced recruitment specialists to reach the best talent.

If you're considering your next career move, now is an excellent time to review your skills and position yourself for new opportunities.

Candidates who continue learning, embrace new technologies and remain flexible will be well placed to succeed in today's changing employment market. When it comes to recruiting, we get it—your business needs people who aren’t just a “good enough” fit but the right fit. You need candidates who will align with your values, enhance your culture, and most importantly—be ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work. But, let’s be real for a second. Sometimes, it feels like recruiting is less about finding the perfect match and more about just plugging the hole. We’re here to tell you, that’s not our style. And frankly, it’s not your style either, or you wouldn’t be reading this blog.
